MMORPG = Social media?

This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while now. Social media is basically about interaction and communication between people. Examples of social media which are often mentioned are Facebook, Myspace, YouTube and Twitter.

However, what is never mentioned is games, more specifically so called MMORPG’s. These are games that could easily be described as gigantic communities in virtual 3d worlds. A couple of examples of these worlds are World of Warcraft (WoW) and Guild Wars. They have millions of users who either play solo or as part of a group. You take part in missions and quests. You interact and communicate with other users/players. Very often there are forums of different kinds where users take part in discussions about the game and its content, and sometimes other more everyday subjects.

As far as I’m concerned these games (MMORPG) should definitely be included in the category of social media. If anyone has a different opinion I would love to here about it.
